The first public notice of the design competition promoted and funded by the Apulia Region for the redevelopment and enhancement of coastal landscapes has been published in implementation of Law no. 14/2008 “Measures to support the quality of architectural and land transformation works” and of the PPTR (Regional Territorial Landscape Plan), approved on 16 February 2015, which includes these objectives among the regional projects of its “Strategic Scenario”, assuming the coastal system as a very important asset for the socio-economic future of the region. The notice involves the Municipality of Torchiarolo and is aimed at the enhancement, requalification and protection of the coastal landscape in the seascape areas of Torre San Gennaro, Lendinuso, Lido Presepe Cipolla and Canuta.
The Municipality of Torchiarolo, in line with the PPTR (Regional Territorial Landscape Plan) and with a participatory process involving the citizens, the social, economic and cultural bodies and also the local political groups, has identified five objectives:
1) refunctionalisation and requalification of the Water-Fronts,
2) rebalancing the relationship between built and natural environments,
3) rationalization of the road systems,
4) strengthening the ecological connections,
5) regeneration of the coastal ecological systems.(…)
The objectives aim towards the regeneration and protection of the coastal territory and the protection of environmental, architectural, archaeological and urban aspects of the coastline, through a waterfront system, a new road connection network promoting slow mobility and eco-friendly paths and increasing the infrastructure services necessary for the correct use of the coastline.
We hope for the participation of many teams of an interdisciplinary nature in order to address the complex problem of the regeneration of the coastal landscapes and to make sure that each of these five selected areas becomes an integrated pilot project useful for other coastal environments. In addition to Torchiolo, the municipalities of Gallipoli, Ortelle, Melendugno, Torchiarolo and Ugento have signed protocols with the Apulia Region.
