Gonçalo Byrne, Lisbon (Alcobaça, 1941). He is the founder and head of the Architecture firm GONÇALO Byrne Arquitectos Lda, which consists of a large interdisciplinary group of professionals with a distinct level of practical experience and research knowledge in architecture and town planning. Diversified in terms of purpose, scale and programme, his recent work includes master-plans, public space projects, town planning and single building projects, project management, development and sustainability. Over the past 35 years, Gonçalo Byrne’s work has been internationally recognized, awarded and exhibited in Algeria, Austria, Belgium, China, Italy, Lebanon, Portugal, Madeira and the Azores, Qatar and Switzerland. He received an Honoris Causa Degree from the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon and one from the Faculty of Architecture of Alghero. He has also won, among many others, the A.I.C.A.|S.E.C. prize and the Gold Medal of the French Academy of Architecture. He has taught in several universities, including Coimbra (Portugal), Lausanne, Venice, Mendrisio, Lovania, Harvard and Pamplona, Viseu (Portugal), Astana and Milan.
